Abstract
Gram Charlier. In the surrounding environment they are constantly found phenomena that can be described
using probabilistic models. This knowledge about the system evolution characteristics
enable to predict future situations and evolve in different disciplines where this modelled
events take place.
The problem arises when, despite knowing the distribution governing the event, its probability
density functions and cumulative distribution does not present a known explicit
closed form. Thus, the need arises to find approaches with analytical closed formula to
sums of positive heavy-tailed random variables, being the aim of this work.
When the number of variables of the sum (N) tends to infinity, the central limit theorem
indicates that the distribution of the sum of independent random variables with finite
variance approaches a Gaussian distribution. Therefore, when N is large enough, such
a distribution can be used to model the sum of random variables. However, an issue is
encountered when N does not satisfy this property.
In order to solve this problem and find out a high precision approximation, Gram-Charlier
and Edgeworth expansions, based on the moments of the distribution, are proposed. Initially,
the classical model of this series will be studied. This will be extended with the corresponding
generalization and finally changes in the expressions of both series will be
analysed.
To assess the quality of the proposed estimations, experiments will be performed on sums
of log-normal variables. In addition to its application interest in fields as finance and telecommunications,
the advantage of analysing this kind of random variables is that, even
they present heavy tails, all their moments are finite. For the accomplishment of these
trials, a code developed in MATLAB will be used due to its suitability for performing
mathematical analysis.
As a conclusion, it is drawn that the generalized series and the proposed modification
successfully approximate to sums of variables when the tails are not excessively heavy
or when N is big enough. Furthermore, in every case, the approximations given by the
truncation of Edgeworth expansion exhibit an improvement over the results obtained by
the Gram-Charlier expansion.
