The main goal of this article is to analyze the education reform that was carried out
by the British public schools during the 19th century according to the concept of the
moralizing function (Hernández Álvarez, 1996). The need for solving the problems due to
the life together of the students led to the introduction of physical-sportive activities as a
mean to control their leisure time. This reform, which was started by Thomas Arnold,
allowed the subsequent modification of the school curriculum in favor of competitive sport
games. This process changed the British society in a very significant way and established
the basis for the sport games. The impact of such modification of the leisure time in these
new sport games and its consequences on the education had a direct influence on the figure
of Pierre de Coubertin and the Olympic Movement.
