Abstract
This Bachelor Thesis consists in the study of the “finite element method” in the analysis of a rectangular waveguide transformer. The goal is to decide which combination of the parameters in the method is better for the study of a rectangular waveguide transformer. The begining point will be an actual problem when it is requested a transformer between two different waveguides.
The first part will be the creation of the transformer. In this part, all the phases from the design process will be followed. Starting with a lumped elements model, a transmission line model will be created. From here, the physical dimensions of the wavegide are obtained.
After that, the finite element method starts. In order to study the designed piece, it is needed the generation of a mesh. The finite elements that we are going to use are tetrahedrons so the mesh has to be formed by tetrahedrons. Two different meshes and six different models of tetrahedrons are used in the study. The differences between them is going to be the number and position of the points where the field calculations are done. These points are called “degrees of freedom”. Once the simulation is done, it is compared with the actual response of the transformer. The response that is obtained from the comercial software CST will be considered the actual one as the physical construction of the component is not made.
Analyzing the difference between the transmission parameters of the waveguide and the comparison of the resources used, a conclusión will be made. A mesh and one of the six tetrahedrons will be chosen as they get a better approximation to the actual response of the transformer.
