Abstract
Everyday problems like altering your regular route to work due to a public transport strike or because the bus you usually take has changed its route, or going by yourself to places you don’t know the way well, like the restaurant where you are going to have dinner with some friends, presents a challenge to people with an intellectual disability. Depending on their level of functional skills, even going for a stroll near home by themselves can be too complicated. As a consequence, many of them are afraid to go places by themselves, thus limiting their independence.
This thesis seeks to increase the autonomy of people with an intellectual disability by means of a tool that allows them to go places by themselves, relying on their caregiver’s help from a distance whenever they need to. A mobile app will allow them to send their caregiver their GPS location along with the video signal live from the mobile phone’s camera. Meanwhile, the caregiver will be able to see in a web page the received GPS location in a map and the live video in a window. In this way, the caregiver will be the one deciding the best route to take and will be able to guide the person with a disability by using visual indications, given that they know what the other person is seeing thanks to the video.
The main objective of this project is to break the barrier of fear, not only the fear people with an intellectual disability might feel to go places by themselves, but also the fear their caretakers might feel at letting them do so. The mobile app allows for an evolution in its usage, from starting sending live video and coordinates before leaving home and keeping it on until destination is reached to activating it only in case a problem occurs. Therefore, the usage of the application will depend on both the starting functionality the person with a disability has and their evolution as they build self-confidence.
The application could be useful for these people for reducing sedentary lifestyle, avoiding to discard job opportunities due to the difficulty of getting to the workplace and enhancing their social integration.
