In the postpartum period there are important physiological and psychological changes in women, and complications may appear to compromise maternal or newborn health. For this reason, health services must attend and monitor the woman in this period. Objectives: To identify the needs of puerperal women, to review the role of nursing in the postpartum period and to analyze what are the benefits of continuity of care at this stage. Methodology: A narrative review through a literature search on databases such as PubMed, CINAHL, CUIDEN, Dialnet, SciELO, Encuentra and Cochrane. Other official documents have also been used for this review. The sources used has been published in the last 5 years and written in Spanish, English or Portuguese. Results: The postpartum period is a time of vulnerability for women, newborn and family. There are needs for self-care in puerperal women and they demand more support from nurses, who are considered the appropriate health professional to provide care at this period. Continuity of care with the addition of home visits has shown greater satisfaction in mothers, benefits for breastfeeding and improved well-being of women. Conclusions: It is necessary to strengthen health education for postpartum women. Nurses play a vital role during the postpartum period in assistance and health education. Continuity of care during this stage has proven to be advantageous for women and newborns, and when home visits are incorporated, the benefits are even greater.en_US
