The performative function of the Pyramid Texts have been outlined in several works dealing with the ritual and magical role of the corpus for the benefit of the deceased and his journey to the afterlife. However, there are no studies on the illocutionary nature of the texts in the corpus, their language and the transformations experienced through the various socio-cultural contexts in the Old and Middle Kingdoms. In this paper I examine the corpus through various linguistic theories on the performativity, structure and semantics of rituals. Likewise, I underline the emergence of this corpus in ancient Egypt as the result of a process of entextualization of previous oral materials
