Abstract
This Bachelor Thesis’s objective is to verify that the data obtained from an electronic nose which has low cost sensors, can be used to monitor routines of human activity in university settings and to check the effectiveness of different machine-learning algorithms for the classification. In the first two chapters, a brief introduction is made about electronic noses and the various methods currently used for monitoring human activity. The time series used for the elaboration of the problems, are obtained from the electronic nose located in the computer case of a classroom of the Escuela Politécnica Superior at the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, in which students, mainly from the third course, are taught subjects of the degree of Computer Engineering. The SMTS algorithm has been used for the classification of the signals, which is a method for supervised classification of multivariate time series that considers the temporal structure of those series. Because the signals of the sensors depend on the previous history and present noise and drift. In addition, the SMTS results has been compared with a multilayer perceptron, as well as different hybridizations of the SMTS. This methodology has been validated with the data obtained by the different sensors of the electronic nose during the teaching of different classes in classroom 5 of the EPS-UAM. First, we analyze a simple problem that consists distinguishing between the beginning of the classes and the end of classes. Afterwards, a more difficult problem has been tested, which is to distinguish between two classes of the same subject where it is known that in one of them the attention is higher than the other. It was necessary that both had a similar number of people, because the difference in the number of students can produce a certain bias on the classification. The analysis of the data collected from the electronic nose along with the SMTS algorithm show that it is possible to classify the signals proceeding from the monitoring of human activity
