Abstract
Introducción: Los jardines, los huertos, y las labores de cultivo que se realizan en ellos, se han asociado, a lo largo de la historia, con efectos positivos para la salud de las personas. Sin embargo, hasta finales del siglo XVIII, esta idea no se introduce en el ámbito clínico, iniciando el desarrollo de una nueva disciplina: la terapia hortícola. Actualmente, una gran parte de la población occidental vive en núcleos urbanos, produciéndose una desconexión generalizada del contacto con la naturaleza y las labores hortícolas. Por ello, se ha considerado de interés, estudiar los efectos de esta terapia. Objetivo: Identificar los efectos de la terapia hortícola en la salud de las personas, descritos en la literatura científica. Metodología: Se realizó una revisión narrativa por medio de una búsqueda bibliográfica, en las siguientes bases de datos: Pubmed, Cuiden, Cinahl, PsycInfo, Cochrane Library y Cochrane Plus. La búsqueda se limitó a artículos publicados entre el año 2000 y el 2018, escritos en inglés y español. Resultados: Se incluyeron 23 artículos que investigan los efectos de la terapia hortícola. Los resultados muestran diversos beneficios para la salud de las personas, sin referencias a efectos adversos. En la salud física, destacan el aumento de la actividad y la mejora de los hábitos alimenticios. En la salud mental, los sentimientos de logro y satisfacción, junto con la disminución del estrés, la ansiedad y la depresión. En el ámbito social, la creación de nuevas relaciones y la mejora de la calidad de las ya existentes. Conclusiones: La terapia hortícola resulta de utilidad, tanto para la promoción de la salud, como para el tratamiento de algunas patologías, sobre todo aquellas de tipo psicosocial. Introduction: The gardens, the orchards, and the cultivation work carried out in them, have been associated, throughout history, with positive effects for the health of the people. However, until the end of the eighteenth century, this idea is not introduced in the clinical setting, initiating the development of a new discipline: horticultural therapy. At the moment, a great part of the western population lives in urban nuclei, taking place a generalized disconnection of the contact with the nature and the horticultural works. Therefore, it has been considered of interest to study the effects of this therapy. Objective: to identify the effects of horticultural therapy on the health of people, described in the scientific literature. Methodology: A narrative review was made through a bibliographic search, in the following databases: Pubmed, Cuiden, Cinahl, PsycInfo, Cochrane Library and Cochrane Plus. The search was limited to articles published between 2000 and 2018, written in English and Spanish. Results: 23 articles investigating the effects of horticultural therapy were included. The results show various benefits for the health of people, without references to adverse effects. In physical health, highlight the increase in activity and improvement of eating habits. In mental health, the feelings of achievement and satisfaction, together with the reduction of stress, anxiety and depression. In the social field, the creation of new relationships and the improvement of the quality of existing ones. Conclusions: Horticultural therapy is useful, both for the promotion of health, and for the treatment of some pathologies, especially those of a psychosocial nature.
