El obispo Ermengol y la (re)invención de la historia de Urgel

Abstract

El presente artículo intenta relatar cómo, cuándo y por qué el obispo Ermengol de Urgell hizo elaborar un documento falso, el acta de consagración de la catedral de Santa María de Urgell, que se convirtió en una herramienta de poder en base a la historia y a la memoria. Por un lado, explicaremos sucintamente la historia del obispado de Urgell y su contexto a principios del siglo XI y, posteriormente, intentaremos mostrar la importancia que tuvo la falsificación del famoso documento en tiempos de Ermengol. El acta tuvo un papel determinante en el proyecto de emancipación de la Iglesia respecto al poder condal que hasta aquel entonces la tutelaba, y sirvió para reescribir la historia de Urgell

This article aims at describing when, how and why the Bishop Ermengol of Urgell had a fake document drafted, the act of consecration of the Cathedral of Saint Mary of Urgell which became an instrument of power for history and the memory. On the one hand, we will briefly describe the history of the diocese of Urgell and its background in the early 11th century, and on the other hand, we will try to show the importance of the forgery of this well-known document in the time of Ermengol. The act played a significant role in the emancipation project of the church in front of the supervising count’s power and was skillfully used to re-write the history of Urgell
