Abstract
This doctoral thesis investigates the bilateral relationships between Spain
and China from 1972 to 1996. This period coincides with the periods of Spanish
history: post-Francoism, transition to democracy and the socialist governments
of Felipe González. On the Chinese side, this period coincides with the last years
of Mao Zedong and the gradual Chinese opening to the outside world done by
Deng Xiaoping.
In order to contextualize correctly the central years of the investigation, a
summary of the Spanish and Chinese foreign policy has been made, since the
accession to power of Francisco Franco in Spain and Mao Zedong in China, until
1996. Subsequently there is a recalling of the relationships between Spain and
China from the Ancient Age to 1972.
The history of the bilateral relationship should not be investigated only from
a state approach, but should also be studied considering new factors such as:
the media, the academic world, the business world and, above all, the game of
perceptions between both countries. In this way, various elements have been
taken into account to approach the investigation.
The central idea of this thesis is to know the basic characteristics of the
Spanish foreign policy during three terms of government, in relation to a country
that escaped the orbit of the priority needs of Spanish politics. It is this same
characteristic what allows the guidelines of Spanish foreign policy to be discerned
without the constraints determined by the needs. It is the construction of a new
space of understanding that starts from zero but which had important historical
references to remember. In addition, in this investigation you will be able to see
the changes in the management of the Spanish foreign policy depending on the
different political regimes.
The analysis of the year 1996, time in which the conditions began to fill the
building of the bilateral relationships between the two countries, will help us to
appreciate both the achievements and the deficiencies of a relationship
characterized by remoteness, a good general understanding and isolated facts
but of a large diplomatic force. With this background, and especially with the
analysis of the mistakes made, we can better project the relationships of the
future
