In the present paper we propose to review the presence of political theology in John
Locke's work, and its correspondence with Carl Schmitt's concept of secularization. First,
we will review A Letter Concerning Toleration, in which Locke articulates a we that
includes protestant sects, excludes Catholics and atheists, and tolerates Judaism as a
religion of docile and productive bodies. This will permit us to establish that the Lockean
subject cannot be called merely Christian, as Waldron has proposed. Second, we will
consider the notion of natural liberty and relative peace in Two Treatises of Government,
and will emphasize the theological and secular character of the arguments that displace man
from any original political membership he may have been born into. Locke will be
discussed with Strauss's interpretation, according to which Locke would propose a merely
amoral and acquisitive theory of property.
