From our point of view,
it requires an overall revision, at least as far as its structure is concerned. The Spanish
educational system appeared to be suffering serious dysfunctions due to the inadequate
lenght of this stage —two years— and also to the subsequent and unfortunate model design to University entrance, whose origin dates from 1974. This is even previous to our
current Constitution and, of course, to the Organic Law 8/1985, of 3 July, regulating the
Right to Education (LODE), the Organic Law 1/1990, of 3 October, General Organisation of
the Education System (LOGSE) or the Organic Law 2 /2006, of 3 May, on Education (LOE),
which have been legislating the Spanish education for the last 30 years. These two dysfunctional
factors of our system, among others, reduce the possibilities of success within
the competitive framework that surrounds the Europe of the 21st century.
This article aims at providing an overview of the current educational policies in other
countries of the European Union, which will allow us to analyze the Spanish model in a
wider context from which we can suggest possible improvements.
