Argumentation theory is the study of practices consisting, wholly or partially, but in a significant way, in asking for, giving and receiving reasons. A practice is defined by implicit rules that those who take part in it are able to recognize, so that in order to describe a practice it is necessary to distinguish normative regularities from merely factual regularities. I contend that the funny, the ridicule and the laughable can help us to recognize the normative regularities and framework conditions defining a practice. When participants laugh at an incongruent or eccentric action performed by another participant they are often pointing out at the involuntary transgression of a rule or at the failure of some condition that makes possible its normal applicationArgumentation theory is the study of practices consisting, wholly or partially, but in a significant way, in asking for, giving and receiving reasons.
