Abstract

The Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (aids) is one of the largest pandemics around the world, affecting over 34 million people. To develop a suitable research that leads to an effective treatment and prevention for this infection, it is essential to dispose of biological material from human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infected individuals. The availability, quality and traceability of the biological material according to the national and European regulations are mandatory. The HIV BioBank, created in 2004 as a research service platform, is in charge of the reception, management, processing, storage and donation of the samples and data of HIV-infected individuals of Spain. According to the rules established by Norma UNE-EN ISO 9001:2008 different tools and measures had been set up in the HIV BioBank with the aim of achieving the adequate development of its activity and an efficient management method. The work performed in the HIV BioBank enables a balance between the requirement requested and the effectiveness of its functions. A systematic working approach has been developed to ensure work quality, traceability of samples and their associated data, maximizing their contribution to the progress of knowledge and improving its effectiveness.
