Abstract

The GERES project is a longitudinal study of elementary school children in five Brazilian cities starting in 2005. Over a period of four years, approximately 27.000 pupils from a sample of 308 public and private schools will be tested once a year in Maths and Reading while teachers, school administrators and parents will be interviewed to determine the impact on pupil learning of school resources, school organization, academic climate, teacher education, work conditions and pedagogy. The presentation covers the reasons for developing a longitudinal design for school effectiveness research in Brazil and the preparations undertaken for the implementation of the GERES project
