Abstract
The project is based on the calculation of likelihood ratios to give a weight or degree of support in the final decision of the judge. It seeks to avoid categorical statements to avoid falling into errors of convicting an innocent or vice versa. To achieve it will study the performance of the LR calculated using three different models: Gaussian, logistic regression and KDF. Thus, the expert will provide a degree of support based on evidence rather than make a decision between two possible, guilty or innocent hypothesis.
For making this project we have used samples from actual fingerprints provided by the department identifying of Guardia Civil. With them was made a database in two formats, individual known footprint with its matching fingerprint taken from a crime scene. Finally in the database 248 will have different individual samples. For each individual can have one to four different fingerprints coincide each sample with a different finger to each individual. So that in total they have 258 pairs of traces for conducting further tests. As an extension to this database continued with palm prints, with similar characteristics of the samples for a total of 14 different individuals were combined, a total of 20 pairs of palm prints.
This database has enabled 10,000 training trials with different combinations of pairs of traces and test trials with 24,964 different combinations of pairs of firgerprints. Dividing to do, specimens, first between training and test and secondly performing two types of combinations, genuine, when they belong to the same source and impostors when they belong to different sources.
With scores (scores) obtained from all comparisons are to be applied three methods of calculating likelihood ratios (LR, Likelihood Ratios). These new scores will be interpretable by themselves and allow us to provide a degree of assurance to the pair of tracks that compares the system you are using, in this case is a methodology accepted by the needs of forensic science. With it you can take a degree of support from the evidence in a court case. This project is not intended to make a final decision between the two hypotheses being considered: guilty or innocent.
Likewise, a study and comparison of the performance achieved by the proposed methods is shown. To evaluate the system performance it is studied using cross-entropy curves (ECE) and also propose LR prior to the calculation of three models of transformation of the scores for correct normalization model.
