This article contains a brief balance of the Spanish historiography about national identities
that has been produced in the recent decades. It argues there is a disproportion between
the number of the studies devoted to the history of peninsular nationalities and the
institutional studies. Consequently, some keys are suggested in order to renovate the historical
understanding of the Spanish state-building process in the nineteenth and twentieth
centuries
