Despite some doubts about its original form and meaning, incohare is the verbalization of the direction adjunct in cohum and designates the action of holding the ploughing beam in the cavity (cohum) of the yoke before starting to plough. Coepi, a perfect tense without a present tense, has caused several difficulties to both ancient and modern grammarians. Regardind it, we can assure thar it does not form a suppletive system withm incipio. It is a perfect tense with a present meaning (<I start>) and this anomaly is explained by the movement of its etymological meaning (co-epi <I have yoked the oxen>) to the immediately following <I start (to plough)>. Its evolution from an auxiliary verb with an infinitive to a transitive or intransitive independent verb is contrary to that experienced by incipio.
