This paper presents TANGOW, a new tool for developing Internetbased
courses,
accessible through any standard WWW browser. Courses are structured by means of Teaching
Tasks and Rules which are stored in a database and are the basis of TANGOW guidance ability. In
TANGOW a Student Process is launched for each student connected to the system. Each Student
Process consists of two main modules: a Task Manager that guides the students in their learning
process, and a Page Generator that generates the HTML pages presented to the student. The Student
Process also maintains information about the actions performed by the student when interacting
with the course in the Dynamic Workspace. This information is used by TANGOW to adapt the
course contents to the student's learning progress. TANGOW has also information about student
profiles, which is used to select, at runtime,
the contents of each HTML page presented.
TANGOW stands for Taskbased
Adaptive learNer Guidance On the WWW.
