Santiago Güell: Segundo miembro español del COI y presidente del COE

Abstract

Desde mediados del siglo XIX una nueva alta burguesía comenzó a surgir en Cataluña debido al desarrollo de la industria y la economía. Este grupo social adquirió modelos culturales y modas europeas como la práctica del ‘sport’. Más allá del fútbol y la pelota vasca, la mayoría de deportes eran practicados en las primeras décadas del siglo XX sólo en Cataluña antes que en el resto de España. En este contexto social y cultural vivió Santiago Güell i López, quien creció en una de las familias industriales más ricas de Barcelona y fue un destacado empresario. Con motivo de su estatus, fue elegido miembro del COI y durante tres décadas fue la figura más destacada del Olimpismo en España

A new bourgeois upper class in Catalonia was born from the middle of the 19th century thanks to the development of the industry and the economy. This social group adopted some cultural model and fashions from Europe, like the sport. Apart of football and pelota, most sports were only practiced in the first decades of the 20th century in Catalonia before than in the rest of Spain. In this social and cultural context lived Santiago Güell López, who grew up in one of the richest industrial families in Barcelona and was an important businessman. Because of his position, he was selected as IOC’s member and became for three decades the main reference of Olympism in Spain.
