Espartero y Prim, o cómo España buscó su “Capitán del Siglo”

Abstract

Napoleón supuso un nuevo concepto de dominio político, tanto en sus formas como en los rasgos de la legitimidad en que se basó su poder. Este modelo se exportó, con adaptaciones, a nuestro país, donde las figuras más relevantes fueron Baldomero Espartero y Juan Prim. Existen rasgos compartidos entre ellos que justifican la hipótesis del presente artículo: sus carreras políticas deben mucho a la legitimidad carismática y a sus éxitos en batalla, igual que el general corso. El artículo tiene dos apartados. El primero analiza los rasgos del imitado modelo de Bonaparte: libertad, patria y carisma. El segundo expone detalladamente las representaciones y consecuencias que ese modelo y su inspirador tuvieron en España, así como la percepción que había sobre el corso. Finalmente, se enumerarán las pertinentes conclusiones

Napoleon represented a new concept of political power, both in his political actions and in the features of the legitimacy on which his power was based. This model was adapted to Spain, where the main figures were Baldomero Espartero and Juan Prim. We could find shared features between them which justify the principal idea of this paper: their political careers owe a lot to charismatic legitimacy and their success on battlefields, as Napoleon did. This paper has two sections. Firstly, the three characteristics of the imitated Bonaparte’s model (liberty, fatherland and charisma) are analysed. Then, it is focused on the representations and consequences that the scheme and Bonaparte had in Spain, as well as the perception of the Corsican hero. Finally, relevant conclusions will be held
