La Monarquía y las Órdenes Militares durante el reinado de Alfonso X

Abstract

El estudio pretende recoger una síntesis del proceso de señorialización de la sociedad castellana de la segunda mitad del siglo XIII, a través del ejemplo de las Ordenes Militares y de su relación con la monarquía. Dos concepciones se enfrentan en una pugna que, de manera larvada o manifiesta, ocupa prácticamente todo el reinado de Alfonso X: la de quienes en torno a la corona defienden un modelo políticamente autoritario, y la de quienes alrededor de la 'ricahombría' del reino, pretenden defender un status de privilegio que ni las circunstancias ambientales ni, sobre todo, los primeros síntomas de la crisis bajomedieval, justifican. La guerra civil con la que finaliza el reinado de Alfonso X, y en la que las Órdenes Militares adoptan un indiscutible protagonismo, es la manifestación más patente de esa pugna.

The monarchy and the Military Orders during the reign of Alphonso X: The study attempts a synthesis of the process by which the nobilty increased its influence in Castilian society in the second half of the 13th century, using the example of the Military Orders and their relations with the monarchy. Two ideas are opposed in a struggle that, covertly or in the open, occupies practically the whole of the reign of Alfonso X: supporters of the crown who defend a politically authoritarian model; and the wealthy nobility (ricahombría) of the kingdom who seek to defend a status quo of privilege which neither the environmental medieval crisis can justify. The most patent evidence of this struggle is the undisputable part played by the Military Orders in the civil war at the end of Alphonso X's reign.
