This essay searches the possibilities of developing the idea and accepting the consequences of a commercial society in the Spanish monarchy during the second half of the eighteenth century. We focus on archival sources in order to reconstruct the debate between those who were more akin to reform the monarchy according to the principles of ‘commercial modernity’ and those who radically denied such possibility. Among them we pay attention particularly to Fernando Ceballos’ Falsa Ilustración. We suggest that the study of the confrontation of these radically different positions shed light on the relationship between the enlightenment and the catholic foundations of the monarchy and on the effectiveness of the idea of a catholic citizenship as well
