The list of metrical forms differs from the list of rhetorical tropes and figures in their dependence on the prosodic properties of the particular language. The artistic function of meter in poetry explains its historical and conventional character. If two different attitudes, when describing the types of verses and stanzas (starting from a theory or looking at the reality of the poetic use), are added, the variable nature of the metric canon is understood.
