Discurso imperial: Imágenes y representaciones del Caribe en National Geographic

Abstract

El texto examina la revista National Geographic como máquina productora y difusora de representaciones del Caribe de 1898 a 2012. Se arguye que estas representaciones expresan las relaciones de Estados Unidos con el Caribe así como sus intereses económicos, diplomáticos y estratégicos en la región. La atención está puesta particularmente en Cuba y Puerto Rico. A partir del análisis de imágenes y textos en perspectiva histórica, el artículo pretende mostrar nuevas formas de entender cómo se han construido las relaciones de Estados Unidos con el Caribe

This article studies the National Geographic magazine as a “machine” producing and transmitting representations of the Caribbean during the 1898-2012 period. These representations, it is argued, convey the relationships of the United States with the Caribbean as well as its economic, diplomatic and strategic interests in the region. The article gives special attention to Cuba and Puerto Rico. By historically analyzing the journal’s pictures and texts, this piece aims to reveal new ways of understanding how the United States has built its relationships with the Caribbean
