As part of the pageantry to celebrate this great event, the Khedive of Egypt had also planned to inaugurate the opera house purposed built with a work commissioned to Verdi: Aida. This premiere was delayed two years, and in the interval France had been defeated by the German Empire and has already losed the splendor which had allowed imposing the canal construction despite British reluctance. The opera and the channel remain, and both have an important role even today.
