Transgresiones y marginilidad. El arte como reflejo de la visión del "otro". Modelos europeos para los cuadros de castas: Ter Brugghen y Wierix

Abstract

Los procesos de visualización o de conceptualización “del otro” son múltiples y variados, y a través de algunos ejemplos de representaciones de indígenas novohispanos, sobre los que aquí proponemos una reflexión, pretendemos analizar algunos de los modelos y paralelismos que se generan desde Europa. Además, en esta estructura jerarquizada se producen trasgresiones y se establecen las categorías de lo periférico o marginal. Con ello, procuramos evidenciar la creación de patrones que, a través del arte, sirven para el refuerzo de una nueva estructuración social, la colonial, y los diferentes procesos de visualización “del otro”. De esta forma, los pintores novohispanos utilizaron referentes europeos, obtenidos a través de estampas, para crear iconografías sobre los propios indígenas, transmitiendo mensajes subyacentes. En este sentido, hemos identificado las estampas de TerBrugghen o Wierix como fuente de inspiración para diversas obras del Museo de América

Given that there are many different ways to visualize the conceptualization of the "other," this paper reflects upon and analyzes some of the models and parallelisms for this produced in Europe, paying particular attention to a series of representations of Mexican Indians. Moreover, in this hierarchical structure, cases of transgression and new categories appear for the peripheral or marginal. Therefore, we should like to explain how such patterns are created through art, and how they reinforce the new social structure, a colonial one, as well as considering the different processes involved in visualizing the "other". Furthermore, colonial painters also used European models - usually prints-, in order to create iconographies of the Indian and, in doing so, they often transmitted underlying messages. Of direct relevance here are the prints by Ter Brugghen or Wierix which we have identified as models for some of the series of casta paintings conserved at the Museo de America (Madrid)
