El siglo XVIII español y el estudio del árabe: El árabe dialectal en la Gramática del Padre Cañes

Abstract

El objetivo de este es la presentación de la Gramatica del P. Cañes, especialmente los rasgos del árabe dialectal que aparecen en ella, no sin antes situarla en su contexto, es decir el siglo XVIII español y el estudio de la lengua árabe en este período. La fuente principal será, por consiguiente, esta obra del franciscano y, como secundarias, emplearemos estudios históricos, lingüísticos y de dialectología que nos servirán para el análisis. En una primera parte se presenta la actividad investigadora y el estudio de la lengua árabe durante el siglo XVIII, para posteriormente analizar la obra del Padre Cañes, su estructura y objetivos, así como un comentario lingüístico. El árabe en el que fue escrita es una variante intermedia entre la literal y la dialectal, mucha más próxima de la primera, sin tener en cuenta el capítulo dedicado a los principios de la gramática literal que están enteramente en esta variante. En nuestro análisis describiremos los principales rasgos del árabe dialectal en el que fue escrita, para concluir que se trata del árabe dialectal de Damasco principalmente

The goal of this article is to present the Grammar written by Father Cañes, focusing on the features of the Arabic dialect which appears in the book, in the context of Eighteenth Spanish Century and the study of the Arabic language in that period. The main source of our analysis is the Grammar itself and, though we also relied on some historical, linguistic and dialectological studies. In the first part, we discuss the research and study of the Arabic language during the Eighteenth Century. In the second part, we review the work of P. Cañes, its structure and goals, and explore some linguistic issues. The Grammar was written in a middle Arabic variety which stands between the classical and the dialectal Arabic (though closer to the former), except for a section of the book devoted to the classical grammar, which was written entirely in this variety. In our linguistic analysis we describe the main features of the Dialectal Arabic and we conclude that the variety employed is primarily the Arabic of Damascus
