Abstract

The proceedings instituted by the Tribunal of the Holy Office constitute a rich and versatile source, for several studies concerning the society of the Modern Age. The work we are proposing follows this broader approach to the content of inquisitorial processes, which goes beyond the study of crimes and penalties. Our study will focus on carpenters who were the target of the repressive machine of the Holy Office of Lisbon in the eighteenth century. The main objective will be to understand the social and work dynamics of these individuals, without, however, omitting the typology of the crimes committed
