Abstract

By virtue of his successful campaign which led him to the borders of India, Antiochus III earned the title “the Great”. When he was defeated by the Romans in the battle of Magnesia, the victorious party mocked him for carrying this title. However, even before there were signs of denigration by ancient authors. He is portrayed as an emotional king who is unable to properly fulfill his royal duties. This article tries to prove that neither the mourning of his son Antiochus nor the wedding of a young girl from Chalcis are adequately described in the ancient sources, which are hampered by hindsight bias. Beyond that, there are some remarks on Antiochus’ behavior towards Babylon and the importance of Seleucus I and Antiochus I as a role model for his rule
