Abstract
The Hermetic texts present a broad set of teachings related to Hermes Trismegistus, a figure resulting
of the union of the Greek god Hermes and the Egyptian Thoth. Both this figure and the texts associated with
it are born in the rich and complex milieu facilitated by the cultural contacts between the Graeco-Roman
and the Egyptian worlds. The teachings contained in these texts have given rise to the current known as
“Hermetism” and what I have called “Hermetic Tradition” in this dissertation.
The aim of this dissertation is to analyze how Hermes Trismegistus and these texts have been key
to understanding certain works belonging to the fantasy and science fiction genres in the 19th, 20th and 21st
centuries. For this type of analysis, I have used the methodology of Classical Reception, which has allowed
to see how Hermetism in Antiquity has been reinterpreted and reworked in succesive ages up to our days.
This dissertation is divided in two mayor parts: in the first part, departing from Antiquity, it is described
how we understand Hermetism nowadays and the fact that is present in the genesis of the different
literary works analyzed in these pages. In the second part, I focus on these works, which have been divided
in three mayor archetypes: Hermetic characters, Hermetic places and Hermetic concepts.
This dissertation is entirely written in Spanish. An English extended summary and concluding remarks
can be found as an Appendix.
