Abstract
The evolution of the Castilian aristocracy during the first decades of the reign of Philip IV of Habsburg, during the valimiento of the Count-Duke of Olivares, offers different visions regarding its integration in the Monarchy and in the service of the sovereign. One of them corresponds to his participation in the political life of the cities and in the Courts of Castile itself, an area of power from which they had been distant since the time of Charles I/V. Through the case study of Antonio Dávila y Manrique, 4thMarquis of Las Navas, and the city of Ávila, it is possible to see the capacity of the ancient nobility to use their privileged position in the urban republics to benefit from the venal negotiations of honours and jurisdictions promoted by the Crown, to safeguard the interests of the local oligarchies and, at the same time, to avoid a political conflict that has been latent for decades
