Masculinidad y movimiento obrero español: las identidades masculinas obreras y el trabajo femenino, 1830-1870

Abstract

Numerosos estudios señalan que la identidad de trabajador sobre la que se articuló el movimiento obrero del siglo XIX en España entrañó una vinculación entre ser un sujeto productivo y pertenecer al sexo masculino. Sin embargo, el proceso de (trans)formación de esta identidad ha sido poco investigado. Este artículo aborda directamente esta cuestión, documentando la existencia de tres diferentes hombres productivos entre 1830 y 1870. Dilucidar la relación entre estas tres identidades con las experiencias, los intereses y las conductas de los obreros que las asumieron permite interpretar bajo una nueva luz la evolución del movimiento obrero

Several studies have emphasized the masculine character of the worker identity that gave shape to the subject of the nineteenth-century Spanish labor movement. However, the specific process of (trans)formation of such an identity has attracted far less attention. This article tackles this issue by documenting the existence of three different historical subjects rooted on different notions of the productive man in 1830-1870. By clarifying the inner relationships between these three identities and the experiences, the interests, and the actions of the workers who assumed them, this article allows to explain the evolution of the Spanish labor movement from a new perspective
