Georgia Makhlouf: Writing as a metaphor for cosmopolitanism

Abstract

El presente artículo se plantea como principal objetivo el estudio crítico de las tres primeras obras de la escritora libanesa de expresión francesa, Georgia Makhlouf. Esta autora se enmarca en las llamadas xenografías francófonas, concepto teórico basado en el estudio de un amplio corpus en el que se engloban numerosas voces literarias surgidas del desplazamiento impuesto o voluntario y que recurren al francés como medio de expresión y tierra simbólica de acogida. Se estudiarán los ejes estructural, discursivo y temático de cada uno de los tres textos seleccionados con el fin de mostrar la recurrencia y relevancia de la noción de cosmopolitismo como crisol en torno al cual se construye la identidad y geografía literaria de esta escritora

Dans l’article qui suit, nous nous proposons comme objectif principal l’étude critique des trois premières œuvres de l’écrivaine franco-libanaise, Georgia Makhouf. Cette auteure s’inscrit dans les xénographies francophones, concept théorique forgé à partir de l’étude d’un vaste corpus de voies littéraires issues du déplacement imposé ou volontaire et qui ont recours au français comme langue d’expression et terre d’accueil symbolique. Nous étudierons les axes structurel, discursif et théorique de chacun des trois textes choisis dans le but de montrer la récurrence et l’importance de la notion de cosmopolitisme comme creuset thématique autour duquel se construit l’identité et la géographie littéraire de cette écrivaine

The main objective of this article is the critical study of the first three works of the Franco-Lebanese writer, Georgia Makhlouf. This author is framed in the so-called Francophone Xenographies, a theoretical concept based on the study of a wide corpus that includes numerous literary voices arising from imposed or voluntary displacement and that turns to French as a means of expression and as a symbolic host land. The structural, discursive, and thematic axes of each of the three selected texts will be studied, in order to show the recurrence and relevance of the notion of cosmopolitanism as the thematic mosaic around which the writer’s identity and literary geography is built
