In recent years, the continuous technological evolution has led to the development of complex fictional stories in new potentially narrative media, such as videogames, whose characteristics are very different from other traditional narrative media, such as literature and cinema. The main defining attribute of videogames is interactivity. The objective of this paper is to study, through textual linguistics, how the interactive component affects the narrative plot in videogames and how, because of that, videogames open up new narrative experiences that are impossible in literature or cinema

Defying the traditional philological channels, the short short story broadens in the digital world beyond writing; it brings together the iconicity of mass media and assembles literary materials with those coming from other systems of non-linguistic meaning. Significant plurality expands the aesthetic resonance of cultural imaginary and emphasizes dialogism, intertextuality, intermediality, hybridity and ambiguity; the reader is confronted with a polyartistic and multisensory experience, where words, by engaging with others artistic forms, acquire a new narrative and aesthetic dimension

This paper aims to study in a conceptual frame called «liquid culture» two discursive strategies that I have labelled as «integration» and «resistance to assimilation» in which are involved hypercodified messages. Both strategies act in a very different way but they have in common the relationship with remediation and some other process that show the metamorphosis of a literary text. In this case the poem by Kipling titled «If» is studied as a part of TV advertisement and as textual part of a picturebook by Mauro Evangelista tittle Lettera a un figlio. Final conclusions invite to rethink the nature of literary text and the canals of «cultural» circulation in the context of mass culture and new media

The mise en abyme is, as we know, a prolific device used not just in literary field. We find beautiful exemplars on it use in different genres and artistic venues as well as in various periods. From classic studies of renowned theorists, such as Lucien Dällenbach, Gérard Genette or Mieke Bal, and from the analysis of a corpus coverings different artistic manifestations and genres (from painting to cinema, theater, novel, story and poetry), this paper offers a typology that allows to sort each case proposed, in spite of the wide range of shades that unfolds

The mixed forms of text and image are a continuum in the history of literature, creating a readable unit of meaningful space which we will call illuminated texts. Notwithstanding this long tradition, these hybrid texts between text and image are nowadays extremely frequent, and this spread could be a problem for literary theory and literary critic. Every theorical approach has profitable elements to take into account but problematic points as well, which difficult the proper textual analysis. This text explores and summarize many theorical constructions, from ecphrasis to «image-text» (W. J. T. Mitchell), from hypotyposis to the «poetics of the iconotext» (Lilian Louvel), from semiotics to digitalism, in order to find the less reductive criteria to read illuminated texts, with a final proposal combining theory of literature and aesthetics

La sombra is the first novel by the Canarian writer Benito Pérez Galdós (1843-1920). Although it did not obtain the same recognition as his realistic works, it has turned out to be an exemplary exponent of nineteenth-century Spanish fantastic literature. In this work, the function of its narrator will be mentioned as a "link" or "censorship", as it is one of the typical elements of the fantastic of the time. Likewise, the characteristics that make it belong to this genre will be highlighted, based on the definitions of Tzvetan Todorov, Ana María Barrenechea and Ana María Morales, among other theorists. Finally, the different types of duplicity presented in the work —objective and subjective; physical and psychological— will be studied, and the motives that make La sombra a representative of the transition from the fantastic terrifying to the fantastic interior will be explained

Evil Tales (1904), Clemente Palma's book, reveals a constant topic, based on the terrifying, typical of romanticism. Likewise, that preference of the author is attributed to his affiliation with Edgar Allan Poe, who constructed discourses characterized by the apocalyptic configuration of characters, situations and environments that exhausted the irrational and the paranormal. Since the publication of the compendium of the Peruvian writer, literary exegesis has manifested itself through reviews and prefaces. However, in a second moment, articles and books that investigate the content developed in this work have been made. This procedure of reception of hermeneutics is what prevailed in this study, considering that the main purpose is to identify the persistent guidelines raised by literary criticism, with the aim of establishing thematic aspects that contribute to the understanding of the text and the generation of research. later, distinguished by their delimitation and originality

This article tries to relate, on the one hand, the novel Frankenstein by the English author Mary Shelley to the sociocultural context ––mainly artistic and philosophical–– in which it was conceived, paying particular attention to the emergence of an aesthetic-epistemological category that, as we will explain, marked the understanding of the authors and creators regarding their surrounding reality: the fragment. On the other hand, we try to approach the figure of the author as a tool for perceiving how the fragment ––understood in this case as a psychosocial reflex–– is a key piece to build a complete portrait of the main characters of Frankenstein

Francisco Umbral: Las negritas de la libertad
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2019) Buron-Brun, Bénédicte de
What’s in a name? Such is the main focus of the daily columns published by Francisco Umbral (FU) first in El Pais (1976-1988), and then in El Mundo (1989-2007). Thanks to his now widely acknowledged use of negritas—bold letters—Umbral challenged the typographic norms to provide unique insights into society at large, both in Spain and abroad. His famous negritas—which later inspired many other columnists—mesmerised politicians, the rich and famous and celebrities of all kinds who were all desperate to attract the attention of the renowned author. For three decades, they provided the perfect stage for the Umbralian/Balzacian Human Comedy that was taking place. Laudatory and sarcastic in turn, they encapsulated the political, social and cultural life which characterised the terms of office of the five presidents democratically elected between the death of Franco in 1975, and that of Umbral in 2007—Adolfo Suárez, Leopoldo Calvo-Sotelo, Felipe González, José María Aznar and José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero. In a superb style which has not been equalled thus far, the shrewd eye of the columnist and the sharp mind of the political pundit intersect to provide the reader with a most authoritative account of the History of Spain at the turn of the 21st century

This present work is an approach to the identity challenge of Miguel de Unamuno’s characters within the transposal from a literary world to a filmic one. The article is focused on the source of the dualism (leitmotif) that has been used to create two of his novels and two film adaptations based in the literary works. In the first part, the tools and resources that appear in Niebla (1914) and in the adaptation made by José Jara are analysed in order to express the dualism “me and the other”. In the second part, both La tía Tula (1921) and the filmic adaptation made by Miguel Picazo are analysed within the dichotomy between “mother woman and virgin woman”. Therefore, we can assess the labour of one of the best known authors of world literature from two different perspectives that try to develop the same impact: show the fight of the opposites

Reinventing politics, gender and society in Victorian culture: A new approach from cultural rhetoric
    (Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2019) Cortés-Ramírez, Eugenio-Enrique
Cultural Rhetoric is the tool with which culture makes society reinvent itself through language. In Victorian Culture, the struggle to be represented supposed a look to the future through a return to the classical world by means of the updating of Rhetoric. In other words, the interest in the ancient societies of Asia and the Mediterranean had awakened within Victorian society. In this updating process, Cultural Rhetoric achieves a new approach to the concepts of Politics, Gender and Society. For this reason, Cultural Rhetoric manages to be that specific instrument with which new cultural acceptances are made within Victorian Society

One of the fundamental aspects of reception of E.T.A. Hoffmann in Mexico is constituted by the reactions that his works aroused in the reading public. The purpose of this article is to show the main criticism texts that Hoffmann’s works received in Mexico during the 19th and early 20th centuries. In this regard, the judgments come from Europe are important to understand the path followed by the interpretations given in Mexico to his work. The opinions expressed through the Mexican press, based their assessments on them at first, and then, in a clear process of adaptation, assimilation and development, they were used in the reflection on the work of the German writer

Richard Wagamese’s Indian Horse: Stolen Memories and Recovered Histories
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2019) Miroux, Franck
This paper purports to explore the narrative devices which enable the Anishinaabe Canadian author Richard Wagamese to compel the reader of his novel Indian Horse (2012) to experience the same violence as that faced by the young protagonist when the repressed memory of the terrible abuse suffered at an Indian residential school resurfaces decades after, disrupting the apparently linear course of the story. This study also seeks to show that Wagamese offers a major contribution to the rewriting of the history of residential schools in Canada by reclaiming Aboriginal narrative forms as a means to recover stolen memories, and thus to reconstruct both the fragmented (his)story and the shattered self
