Ethnicity in the Assyrian Empire. A view from the nisbe, (II): "Assyrians"
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Centro Superior de Estudios de Oriente Próximo y Egiptología, 2009) Fales, Frederick Mario
This is the second of three planned articles on ethnicity in the Assyrian empire, with ethnicity involving the identification of group identities and/or differentiations on the basis of mutual contact, as observed from the protagonists' viewpoint or from that of the surrounding social order, along the Barthian model. On a documentary basis, the Assyrian empire lends itself in a unique manner as observation point for the study of the mechanisms of ethnicity in the ancient Near Eastern context. The article focuses, like the others, on the study of “ethnic-group terms” as identifiers of ethnicity within the Neo-Assyrian period, and specifically on those terms to which the "gentilic" suffix (nisbe) was applied. The particular theme chosen for this article regards the ethnic-group term "Assyrian" (Aššurāyu and other designations) as utilized in both official (royal) inscriptions and "everyday" (or state archival) documents from the Neo-Assyrian empire. The attempt is to bring forth the flexibility, and even at times the ambiguity, of the definition that the Assyrians offered of themselves in different official or discursive contexts, as well as in the light of diachronical variations and shifts. After a lengthy overview of the sources, it may be concluded that the "everyday" and official documents differ in their definition of "Assyrians", due to chronological, compositional, and contextual factors involving the two textual corpora. Although some ranges of meanings of Aššurāyu or its synonyms show overlaps between them, only the state archival texts indicate "Assyrians" as members of the élite classes of the Empire, entitled to professional and juridical privileges on the basis of the king's favor; whereas the royal inscriptions are unique in pointing out the king's role as rescuer of poor "Assyrians" who had been left stranded or who had lost their possessions abroad. Summing up, a decided pride/relish in inborn/inbred group particularities, combined with a proactive (and ultimately optimistic) impulse to expand "Assyrianness" through the addition of external personnel to the commonwealth, characterize in a singular manner the Assyrians among ancient Mesopotamian peoples

The transition between Early Dynastic and Akkadian Periods brought deep changes to the Ancient Near Eastern culture and politics. The expansion of the boundaries and the complexity of relations with neighboring populations involved a new kind of kinship, centered on a warrior, valorous and almost heroic king. Epic cycles started, telling about the extraordinary deeds of Akkadian kings, described almost exclusively as invincible warriors. The repercussions of this change are evident even in the material production, specifically in the cylinder seals. Indeed most of these decorations have contest scenes with men, gods, mythical beings and animals. This kind of iconography starts in Early Dynastic Period and is completely reworked in Akkadian Period, both technologically and stylistically, becoming some kind of dynastic emblem in which the new features are imposed in the artistic panorama of the countries subjected to the power of Akkad

The present paper examines the formula LUGAL-aš uttār ‘words of the king, i.e., orders of the king’ in the law texts of the Old Hittite period. In Hittite the word uttar presents a wide variety of meanings: ‘word, speech; thing; legal case; reason”. The etymological interpretation of uttar has proven to be very difficult: three different Indo-European etymologies have been proposed. The hypothesis is that Hitt. uttar is a semantic calque from Akkadian awātum ‘spoken word, utterance; news, report; command, order, decision; legal case; matter, affair, thing’. Moreover, the relations with the synonym memiÔa(n)- are investigated: memiÔa(n)- and uttar are largely synonymous, both possessing the three basic meanings ‘word’, ‘deed’, and ‘matter, affair’. Although uttar is well attested in Old Hittite, memiÔa(n)- first appears in Middle-Hittite texts and in New- Hittite copies of older texts. During the New-Hittite period memiÔa(n)- became more common than uttar and gradually assumed some of the latter’s usages

The publicity has the aim of making possible the knowledge of acts or events, that produce legal effects, to anyone in desire. This aim is especially important for the alienation of real estates, to enable the buyer to know the legal status of what he wishes to buy. In Old Babylonian period the proper instruments for the publicity were also formal requirements, i.e. the presence of witnesses (sometimes also officers, and often they were neighbors) and the drawing up of a written, and also sealed, document. These elements could mean that, during the Old Babylonian period, publicity was in an advanced stage of development, where it provides certainty for the contracting and third parties, but it promotes also the sale of real estate producing formal titles, that were more suitable for economic circulation.

The magic duel from Sumer to Grail: Considerations on a Study by A. Coomaraswamy
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. Centro Superior de Estudios de Oriente Próximo y Egiptología, 2010) Mander, Pietro
In 1944 Ananda Coomaraswamy published an essay on the parallels between the plot of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, a Medieval English poem that forms part of the cycle of The Knights of the Round Table, and the mythological Hindu tale on the fight between the god Indra and Namuci. By means of this essay Coomaraswamy expounded his manifesto of Philosophia perennis, and referred to many mythologies of other cultures to illustrate the metaphysical theme of the One and the Many, the creation of Time and Space, and the Reintegration into the One. At that time the Sumerian poem Lugal-e ud melambi nirĝal was not well known. Now it is not only possible to integrate the documentation Coomaraswamy put forward with this poem and other Mesopotamian myths, but also to include Mesopotamian religious thought in the general pattern he outlined
