    Sobre contexto y teoría literaria
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2018) Jiménez Martínez, Mauro; UAM. Departamento de Lingüística, Lenguas Modernas, Lógica y Fª de la Ciencia y Tª de la Literatura y Literatura Comparada; Departamento de Lingüística General, Lógica y Filosofía de la Ciencia, Lenguas Modernas, Teoría de la Literatura y Literatura Comparada, Estudios de Asia Oriental
In this paper, we analyze the importance of context in modern literary theory and the relevance of context within literary study. After the fall of formalism and structuralism, which emphasized the autonomy of the text and the specificity of literature—we can say that poststructuralism emphasizes the contextual implications of literary criticism. The meaning of context within poststructuralist perspectives differs, however, depending upon the epistemology of a given perspective

¿Qué dice la fantasía de nuestro mundo? Sobre el concepto de «reducción alegórica»
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2018) Asensi Pérez, Manuel
The evolution of the «theory of World´s Model» led us to the concept of «allegorical reduction», in order to explain the way in which (so called) «fantastic» texts exercise its modelisation on the receivers, in a similar way as «realistic» texts do. Through a re-interpretation of some Reception Theory’s concepts, and through the examples of the TV series Cuéntame, and the American film I am Legend, we provide the grounds to the notion of «Allegorical reduction»

The paper analyses the problems generated by the adaptation of stories between genres: novel, theatre, cinema and TV, focusing on the only adaptations that have been made of Clarín’s La Regenta, and particularly, on the TV version by M. Bollaín. The adaptation process involves two authors, two texts and two ways of reception. The text belongs to different genres, with verbal and non-verbal languages. The adapted text is the effect of a transduction process, which is achieved thanks to the semantic ambiguity and polyvalence of the literary text

Transubstanciación de la realidad en El Jarama de Rafael Sánchez Ferlosio y Veladas del Nilo de Naŷīb Maḥfūẓ
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2018) Nasr, Adel Mohamed Mohamed
Comparative literature follows the most effective bridge of approximation of cultures, an axis of interculturality and a revealing source of the relationships between the different areas of human expression. Counting on this method highlights the confluence between two realistic works, which reveal both the Spanish and Egyptian reality of the mid-twentieth century and, precisely, the fifties in Spain and the sixties in Egypt: The Jarama of Sánchez Ferlosio and Adrift on the Nile of Naŷīb Maḥfūẓ. These works reflect the sufferings and opinions of the poor classes of their respective countries. In the same way, the authors criticized through these novels the passivities of their respective communities. Thus, embody, in this sense, two living examples of the transubstantiation of reality, which converge in many aspects and even in the titles, which are the names of two rivers

La literatura como crimen en Juan Goytisolo
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2018) Luque González, Gonzalo
In Juan Goytisolo’s work there is a tendency to consider the act of writing as a subversive attitude, an act against a repressive and alienating society. We can trace this attitude in Modernism and its consolidation in the avant-garde movements with an anti-bourgeoisie hint. Goytisolo recovers this tradition fighting against the inevitable recuperation and integration of any subversive content by the hegemonic discourses. In this approach to the literary act we observe certain problems concerning the political and moral consequences of his writing

The poetics of Felisberto Hernández oscillates between the fantastic and the strange literary gender, between the metaphorical and the allusive. His writing manifests the folds of a subjectivity that likes to hide behind the literary mode. The biographical and the imaginary are conforming the internal plot of a narrated world always oriented towards the textual opening. The present work tries to cover a topic that is quite present in the Felisbertian narrative, namely, the topic of sexuality. La mujer parecida a mí (1947) will be the textual field where to investigate a reading in pornographic key of the work articulating it with a reflection on the relationship between literature and representation of the sexual act

«Penélope», a Lourdes Ortiz’s story which responds to the demystifying trend of the twentieth century literature, is characterized by the rewriting of the odyssey episode of Ulysses’ return, but from the point of view of Penelope, the woman who suffers his absence. That is the reason why our objective is to analyze how this modern story relates to Homer’s epic poem, looking at different elements of Ortiz’s story: the narrative structure, the stylistic figures, the plot, the characterization of the characters and the themes or motifs. Such a comparative analysis reveals that the Odyssey works as a source of content and a structural model for this story, which uses a demystifying and feminine tone to relate the argument of the husband’s return and offers a deeper psychological characterization of Penelope, victim of the oppression

These lines define the literary motif as a fundamental element to establish relationships and comparisons between literary texts, due to the migratory nature of the concept. The epistemic issues that support the notion of literary motive are analyzed, as well as their origins in the texts of Russian formalism, starting from an element taken from the world of arts and music. Through the concept of literary motif, the existing relationship can be shown, from thematic units, between works from different historical moments or from different latitudes, where, however, there are nuclear ideas linking significantly different texts

Del exilio a la estetización del desarraigo: Un análisis comparativo de Americanah y Ghana must go
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2018) Vergilio Leite, Lucimeire
Writers living and writing about rootlessness have been developing a distinctive trend within the traditional literature of exile, in which the nostalgic perspective of being unable to return home is replaced by one that calls «home» anywhere in the world. Two novels that address this issue in detail are Americanah, by Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie, and Ghana Must Go, by Taiye Selasi. This article sets out to analyse to what extent the perception of this new backdrop of homelessness differs from traditional exile, as well as how a new aesthetization of displacement or rootlessness poses questions to the narrative and to the identity of the characters in the novels. The theory developed by several authors in the realm of cultural studies has guided the comparison with a view to achieving the proposed objective

The purpose of this article is to analyze and compare the novel by the Spanish writer Camilo José Cela and the Egyptian author Alaa al-Aswany, emphasizing the features of poverty and sex in the two novels: La colmena (1951) and The Yacobian building (2002). We also highlight the causes and circumstances that led some characters to resort to sex as their only alternative and escape route in one society as in the other. Therefore, this research work approach both the Spanish and the Egyptian reality to which the author refers

In 1902, Hugo von Hofmannsthal wrote Chandos Letter, a text that tries to show a problem that ended up being called the crisis of fin-de-siècle. This is exemplified in the renunciation of the classicist tradition that had been dominating much of the knowledge until then. In this context, the only solution was to find new languages capable to explore the limits of each of the affected disciplines. In the case of literature, one of the authors who overcame these limits was Franz Kafka, whose narrative is dominated by an irony with which he managed to say what seemed unspeakable. This article will explain the use of this irony as an essential element in the configuration of the contemporary novel, while at the same time it will serve as a basis to argue in favor of an aesthetic autonomism when explaining the moral reactions to fiction

Anales del alba represents at the same time both a norm and an exception. Its author, Juan Pedro Quiñonero, won in 2000 the VIII Short Novel Award Juan March Cencillo with this story that is complex in its reading and its generational or stylistic ascription. This journalist, correspondent of ABC established in Paris and recognized in 2016 with the Journalism Award Cirilo Rodríguez, has been able to contemplate the evolution of literature with distance and to represent a satellital exception in relation to other Spanish writers. Exceptional is to find short novels written by contemporary Spanish authors, and even more unusual is to find experimental or avant-garde treatments, as in the case of this literary work; in the same way, it is difficult for criticism and literary theory to define the genre of the short novel

Poesía que es pintura. Écfrasis literaria en Exposición de Olvido García Valdés
(Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, 2018) Plaza Velasco, Marta
The poems of Olvido García Valdés’s Exposición are based on paintings. This paper analyzes this set of poems paying special attention to the relationship established in them between poetry and painting through literary ekphrasis. In the first part we approach the ekphrasis from a theoretical point of view, trying to offer a definition of this concept, reflect on its theoretical implications and make some methodological considerations. In the second part, the poems are analyzed addressing aspects such as the importance of the paratextual elements, the selection of painters and works that are described, the formal characteristics of the ekphrastic descriptions or the dialectics between the different artistic languages

These four contemporary novels don’t share just the symbolic name of their main characters, Daniel. Richard Parra, Juan Marsé, José Manuel Caballero Bonald and Miguel Delibes check the most important features about the bildungsroman genre, and by their roles they will revisit the experiences and feelings that finish the childhood and inaugurate the adult age by knowing themselves, building friendship, pain and hurt, love and death. Everyone of them will require a coordinate in order to offer one place to the time (it’s named cronotopo), having many of the keys of the lyric, autobiographic and/or neonaturaliste romance (one of the several faces of the Spanish novel along the last decade of the past twentyth century).
