The present study aims to reflect on the dualistic conception of the work of Gil Vicente in the Auto of the Barca de Inferno where the discernment between Evil and Good ponder as necessary elements for the atonement of sins. Starting from the motto ridendo castigat mores and because life is theater, Gil Vicente set out to characterize certain aspects of his contemporary society, favoring a lively shrewd analysis through the critical gaze on certain type characters, representatives of certain social strata and varied socioeconomic characteristics

A paradoxical situation typical of sub-Saharan Africa has to do with the co-presence and ubiquity of suffering and even abjection on the one hand and laughter and humour on the other. The explanations that have been proposed in this regard are partial in the sense that either they obviate part of the history of the Africans or they treat the humorous practices separately according to whether they are popular or not. We intent to show that this situation also occurs in the African diaspora and, therefore, cannot be dissociated from an African ethos of humour that is closely linked to what Obadare (2009) calls ‘African zest for life’. More generally, the paper aims at examining the humourous practices, intended as manifestations of this attitude, from the point of view of the functional and formal changes they have gone through in recent history

This article deals with the figure of the jester as the one who is allowed to say «what cannot be said». I rely on a current example: the controversy raised by a Comedy Central video in which comedian Rober Bodegas performed a stand-up routine centered on gypsies. This paper analyzes the aspects that could have provoked the flood of criticism that followed, from the subject of the jokes, the nature of its premises, its rhetoric or the comedian’s action itself

When violence engulfs everything, laughing is the only way out. In North Mexico, where violence related to drug trafficking happens on a daily basis, writers use humour to hide this hideous and unspeakable reality. Some of them draw upon the light-hearted jest, whilst others reflect upon problems related to violence, drug trafficking and corruption and research these topics to a greater depth. In this paper, some examples of novels that are considered “drug dealing literature” (narcoliteratura) are given, where humour is the key element

In his novels, Terry Pratchett has poked fun at almost everything, and through his sense of humour, has offered us his hilarious and critical view of human nature and the world around us. There is hardly a topic - philosophical, metaphysical or what have you, that his brilliant satire hasn't put under the microscope, but what is most astonishing is that his instrument of choice is the parody of epic imaginary worlds fiction. His critical analysis of reality through the distorted mirror that is fantasy fiction is perhaps, putting aside his sensational humour, Pratchett's trademark. With this in mind, instead of giving a general summary of his work, or his view of reality, this article will focus on his perception of literature, specifically, epic literature and the role of the hero. We will be looking at The Last Hero, from his extensive saga, Discworld

The aim of this work is to analyze the presence of humor in advertising from a rhetorical and discourse analysis perspective. Our starting point would be humor as a generic idea that is applied, firstly, to persuasive strategies and rhetorical devices, where delectare has an important function although subordinated to movere; secondly, to the idea of humor in advertising from a discourse analysis point of view, where enunciation, themes, double discourse and comedic devices are considered; and, finally, to persuasive principles and rhetorical devices with a focus on discourse analysis applied to humor in advertising

Words carry sublexical meaning within themselves, that is, certain sublexical features which allow them or prevent them from agreeing with other words, and, consequently, determining whether these words can be combined. The Generative Lexicon Theory describes how words’ sublexical information is organised, also what are the existing possible mechanisms for combination, and how these combinations sometimes result in new meanings and/or senses. The lack of lexical agreement between words or forcing two words into agreement to generate new senses sometimes result in impossible discourse sequences causing a good laugh
