dc.description.abstract | The career of Luigi Guglielmo Moncada-Aragón y La Cerda, Prince of Paternò,
VII Duke of Montalto and, starting from 1667, better known as cardinal Moncada
unequivocally shows the multiplicity of loyalties able to compromise ministers
political activities. About the concrete case of the Duke-cardinal, he changed the
meaning of loyalty, or, better, he maked a refreshed sense of it, in correspondence
to each political charge he ruled: his previous attitude towards military field, such as
his rule as a viceroy, or as a cardinal, and, finally, his dream of becoming Charles II’s
prime minister made him do a free, maybe ambivalent or really ambiguous,
interpretation of loyalty to the Crown | en_US |
