Abstract
Starting from the analysis of the children in the domestic sphere and its relationship with the reproductive activities within the household, our study addresses the way in which the economic context determined the access of children and young people to the labour market in Madrid, what kind of opportunities it offered them to avoid dire conditions and how it determined their labour and economic future. Our research also demonstrates the decisive role of the orphan schools in the economic strategies of poor families in Madrid and the weight that the industrial policies of the Crown and the interests of merchant capital had in the evolution of these schools and the welfare system in Madrid during the course of the Seventeenth and Eighteenth centuries
