comparison with two other domains, natural sciences and social sciences. The sample
(N=535) included participants of different ages (from 11 to 60 years). Participants were
confronted with a questionnaire for each of the domains and asked to establish their
degree of agreement with several statements concerning certainty and knowledge
acquisition. The different questionnaires contained parallel items in all three domains.
Participants were also asked to justify their answers and to explain their epistemological
criteria. The answers were analyzed according to their agreement with objectivist,
relativist or constructivist positions. The results showed that the participants held specific
epistemological conceptions for each of the domains at issue. In natural sciences the
participants resorted to objectivist criteria in a greater proportion than in social sciences,
and knowledge in natural sciences appeared to be more closely linked to experts and
personal abilities than in social sciences. The differences were still sharper in the moral
domain; more relativistic positions were found in the moral domain than in the other
domains, as well as a stronger belief in immediate and shared knowledge. This research
highlights the need for an epistemological education aimed at providing students with a
constructivist perspective not only in the scientific domains, but especially in the moral
domain, through education in values
